F.H.M. Murray follows his story from his Scottish ancestry (from 1235 A.D) to his birth, the racial struggles in his life that led his lifetime fight for civil rights for African Americans. Ultimately, however, this biography of Freeman Henry Morris Murray (1859-1950) reveals, for the first time, hidden family mysteries and sheds new insight on various aspects of black history, such the Underground Railroad before and after the Civil War, the Niagara Movement, Booker T. Washington, W.E.B. Du Bois, William Monroe Trotter, and African-American life in Washington, D.C. and Alexandria, Virginia.
As a child, Murray faced rejection for the color of his skin. Although he searched for an identity and a feeling of belonging, he learned to excel in the face of adversity. As an adult, he fought for equality and civil rights of African Americans, forcefully driving home the point (which he called his Enlarged Vision Model) that they could change their social status by becoming better educated, grabbing at opportunities, and simply working harder. This very model is the platform he used in his own life: refusing to take no for an answer, he studied hard and entered an astonishing array of professions as a teacher, civil servant, lecturer, newsman, editor, author, publisher, printer, and founder of several newspapers and businesses. In addition, he never stopped trying to help his people, most remarkably by creating his own secret Underground Railroad in Virginia that operated undiscovered for several decades.
Author Anita Hackley-Lambert "was born by accident in Washington, D.C." and raised in Prince George's County in Maryland where she currently resides with her family. She attended college at Northern Virginia Community College, Prince George's Community College, and Howard University where she studied information technology and business management. She founded her first company, Innovative Computer Concepts & Services in 1989, followed by Hackley-Lambert Enterprises, Inc. in 2001. She recently launched HLE Publishing to publish her upcoming books and HLE Outreach, a not for profit organization will support and sponsor programs to benefit community outreach efforts. Hackley-Lambert is now pursuing her new career in writing and publishing. She is also president/founder of the Maryland Chapter of the National Association of Women Writers and is a member of the International Women Writers Guild.
